The Catherine Braslavsky Ensemble is a group of singers and instrumentalists based in Paris, who specialize in medieval music, but also compose music of today, inspired by sacred texts. Since 1997, they have been chosen by Rev. Lauren Artress to sing and play each year at Chartres cathedral, accompanying the groups sponsored by Veriditas and the Episcopal Diocese of San Francisco.

Their CD CHARTRES, recorded during five nights in the space of the Chartres labyrinth, is a distillation of their music. Much of it consists of a selection of the most beautiful chants and pilgrim songs of the period when Chartres was being built. Besides the medieval Christian chants, there are a number of more ecumenical, contemporary pieces, sometimes evoking echoes of India and the Middle East. One example of this original music is the Kaddosh, sung in Hebrew and Latin. (The Kaddosh, called Sanctus in Latin, is an ancient prayer which is common to both Jews and Christians). Another example is the Abwoun, or Lord's Prayer, sung in Aramaic to an original melody by Catherine Braslavsky, and inspired by her researches in ancient sacred chants. These and other pieces make for a richly varied CD, including the sounds of instruments such as oud, cello, dulcimer, frame drum, and Indian tampura. But the primary focus is on the human voice, which resounds with incredible beauty in that space. As the musicians themselves say:

"In this high holy space, everything called us to silence, to return to an inner peace which is our true home. Surely this was the intention of all sacred medieval architecture, and of the music which was sung in it. When we first launched our voices in song into this space of the labyrinth, located at the entrance to the nave, a surprise awaited us: the exquisite quality of the resonance there. Unlike most other large Gothic spaces, it does not swallow sound, but enhances it with a reverberation which is profound and subtle. It is our hope that this recording will convey a feeling of that resonance of the labyrinth, both inner and outer."

"Uplifting and inspiring! Catherine and Joseph are truly gifted musicians. Allow them to enrich your life."
Lauren Artress

Solo piano music written and performed by Martin Gregory specifically for labyrinth walking.

Track 1: Labyrinth Walk
The title track features 55 minutes of uninterrupted improvisational piano music. Composed to accompany an actual labyrinth walk, the performance is a relaxing and transformative meditation which can also be enjoyed during any quiet activity. Extended chant-like sections suggest the simple focus of walking the path, while more lyrical and emotional passages encourage reflection and peace-filled moments. A sense of centered stillness is held in balance with the eternal movement of the labyrinth.

Track 2: Kokopelli
A 20 minute instrumental arrangement inspired by the ancient landscape of the American Southwest and Native American stories of Kokopelli, the flute player. This composition evokes a dream-walk, and provides a wonderful background ambience for labyrinth walking.
